How to Find the Right Auto Insurance?

Top 10 Tips for Choosing Car Insurance

Owning a car these days isn't cheap. It's not just the buying price; it's the cost of gas and maintenance, and of course, car insurance coverage. Obviously, you want to find the best ways to reduce the cost of vehicle ownership - after all, you bought your car to make your life easier, not so you could lie awake at night obsessing over how you're going to be able to afford it.

We can't help much with the cost of gas, and if you need to have your brakes done or your oil changed, we're afraid you're on your own. But we can tell you how to save on car insurance. Here are our top ten tips.

  1. Choose a Top-Rated Insurer:

Some are better than others when it comes to dealing with payments, claims and other issues.

  2. Check Your Rates Annually:

Make sure that you're getting the biggest bang for your buck. You can find car insurance comparison tools online, and of course you can get car insurance quotes in person from different agents.

  3. Choose the Right Deductible:

Don't necessarily shy away from a high deductible for your car insurance coverage. It reduces your premiums, but if you do have an accident, you'll end up spending more out of your own pocket. If you have a good driving record, though, and you've never had an accident in which you were found to be at fault, you might actually want to take the gamble, go for a higher premium, and reap the rewards in terms of savings of up to 40%.

  4. Maintain a Good Credit Rating:

Pay your bills on time, all the time, and check your credit score regularly. Mistakes can happen, and they can lower your score, which can, in turn, adversely affect the insurance premiums you can expect to pay for auto insurance.

  5. Report Lowered Mileage:

If you're not using your car as much as you used to, let your insurer know. You might be entitled to a lower premium on your car insurance coverage.

  6. Review Your Coverage:

Make sure that you're effectively covered for both damage to property and bodily injuries. Remember that going with the minimum car insurance coverage required by law is not usually the best idea.

  7. Select the Proper Car:

When you're shopping for a new car, make sure that you compare the collision data for that make and model. Often, there can be huge differences in the auto insurance premiums that you can expect to pay for very similar vehicles.

  8. Find Out Where Your Insurer Sends You For Repairs:

Often, you can expect to pay ridiculously high premiums for car insurance coverage if your insurer has an “arrangement” with a local repair shop. While we're not exactly suggesting that abuse is rampant in the industry, if the shop that your insurer wants to send you to charges twice as much for a repair as any other shop in the area, then obviously something is wrong, and you may end up paying auto insurance premiums that are entirely too high.

  9. Look for Discounts:

If you're considered to be a lower-risk driver (meaning that you're of a certain age, married, have a long history of safe driving, have taken a safe driving course, etc.) then you may be entitled to discounts on your auto insurance premiums. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-theft devices, this can also help. And if you can bundle your home and auto insurance together, you could end up realizing huge savings.

  10. Watch Out for Scams:

Unscrupulous people can end up ripping you off by staging accidents that could give rise to an insurance claim against you. If you are in an accident, call the police, take photos, and don't make any statements to anyone other than the police.

Those are our top ten. Of course, there are other hints and tips that will help you choose the right car insurance and save money doing so. A Google search can yield a wealth of results.
